R. Mike Nichols is a native Californian; born in Long Beach and raised in La Mirada. His art training began at the age of 15 when he was enrolled in a correspondence course through Art Instruction Schools. At California State University, Long Beach he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and Masters in Art. While in school he discovered Dr. Martin's Dyes, a highly concentrated color that you added to water. That was when he fell in love with watercolor, over 40 years ago.
Mr. Nichols is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, a Signature Member of Watercolor West, the San Diego Watercolor Society. He has received numerous regional, national, and international accolades and is a part of several permanent collections that include the Riverside Art Museum, the Inland Empire Museum of Art, the Orange County Fair, Riverside Community College, Redlands Community Hospital and the City of Fontana.
His work has been juried into the Salmagundi Club, the National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Northwest Watercolor Society, California Watercolor Association, Signature American Watermedia, Southern Colorado Watercolor Society and Butte County Watercolor.
Three of his works have traveled internationally, “Watercolorist”, by invitation to the Eau en Couleurs International Watercolour Biennial in Belgium, “Quorra by the Gate” was juried into Watercolor International II in Greece, and currently “Reading the Morning Paper” is part of the Shenzhen Small Image Exhibit in China. His Acrylic painting “Floating 3” toured in California Dreaming: An international Portrait of Southern California where it showed in Italy, Oceanside, and Riverside.
Inspired by the world around him, the play of light and shadow on any subject will catch his eye.
