JUROR: Evalyn Alu

Evalynn J. Alu was born and grew up in Los Angeles. She was raised by parents who encouraged her to experiment and enjoy art and creativity. Marrying young, she moved to Orange County, with her husband, to raise their two sons. The desire to study art was strong and when her youngest son (Jeff Alu) was three she went back to school to study art at California State University at Fullerton. Evalynn earned her degree after twelve years of study.

Picasso, Motherwell, Kline and Henry Moore are the artists who have heavily influenced her. Working with watercolor and experimenting with lithography and etchings have also influenced much of the work she does today. Evalynn’s work was representational for years and she gradually discovered a need and fascination with objective abstract form, mostly derived from the universal forces that are forever present. Experimentation with color as well as with varying application soon became her focal point. Gradually layering paint using many techniques associated with water color and oil paint allowed Evalynn to create feeling and mood that encouraged her to break away from the usual application of mediums and rules. She is restrained about discussing her work since it is her hope that her creations will allow the viewer to discover for themselves what their own mood or lifestyle will pull from each piece.

Her artwork has been exhibited in numerous solo and juried exhibitions. She has won competitions at both local and international levels.

Evalynn states, “Perfecting my techniques while experimenting is always a part of any of the work I do. Creating movement filled with emotion of the moment becomes an intriguing experiment for me. I am always searching for answers in my art. I know, should I find these answers, my need to create might no longer exist.”
