SALES: The Arts Colony's commission is 20%. Once a piece is accepted into this exhibit, sale of that piece is subject to TAC’s commission until the end of the exhibit.
DELIVERY OF ART: Accepted artwork must be hand delivered to TAC on July 30th, 2021 or July 31st, 2021 between 10 am and 2 pm.
*Artwork may be accepted prior to the open take-in times by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please call Tony Podue at 714-876-5559. Entry fees for artwork submitted prior to the open take-in times must be pre-paid using our on-line payment system and a printed receipt must be turned in, along with the show entry form, at the time the artwork is submitted.
ART CONDITION: Artwork must adhere to the size requirements, be clean, framed, wired and ready to hang or place on a base. Paint & any other materials must be dry. Label each piece on the back of the piece. Labels can be found on the entry form. Please see our Show Guidelines for more information regarding the artwork specifications, as well as some helpful video tutorials on framing and wiring your piece.
AWARDS: Cash awards will be given for artist entries only as follows: $150 for Best in Show, $100 First Place (Overall), $75 Second Place (Overall), $50 Third Place (Overall), $100 for Best in Theme (Overall), $25 for First Place in each qualifying category. Non-monetary award ribbons will be given for 2nd, and 3rd, for all qualifying categories and theme. Special Awards and Honorable Mention Ribbons may also be awarded based on merit.
JUROR: Joe A. Oakes
Each painting is an emotional response to time and place. The colors, real or imagined, are chosen to evoke a feeling. I choose to express those feelings through the use of bold, vibrant highlights and shadows of violet hues. I want my viewers to feel what I feel and place themselves in the scene. Landscapes are about the joy of nature and the colors it offers us. My aim, as an artist, is to promote an awareness of nature by challenging each person to think about the colors of the landscape in a new way.
Artist Joe A. Oakes was a curious and observant child. He believe this is what led him to start creating art at the age of five. It was a way for him to keep record of the things he saw and found interesting.
Joe was born in Chicago and grew up in the city and it’s surrounding suburbs. His love of mountains and other natural scenes grew mostly from his own imagination. Throughout his life, he has always been fascinated by the natural world and how to represent it through drawing and painting. This interest was cultivated throughout his school years and further developed when he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton.
After completing his degree, Joe went right to work as a graphic designer, taking a break from his personal, artistic endeavors. He concentrated solely on his work and creating a family life. He believes that two major events of his life are what motivated him to paint again. The first was his cancer diagnosis in 1994 and the second was the loss of his son in 2009. These strengthened his resolve to make a career for himself as a full-time artist.
Soon he began painting again, creating small pieces in pastel before moving on to acrylic on canvas. But always working on his favorite subject, the landscape. He prefers studio painting as it allows for him to focus on pieces that are vibrant and colorful but at the sam time, calming.
Joe is also an art instructor, teaching painting classes and workshops in a variety media. He enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for art with others and helps students to be successful in their own artistic endeavors.
His work has been displayed in both group and solo exhibitions regionally and nationally and he has received numerous awards for his work. Joe lives and works in the Inland Empire of Southern California. There he is surrounded by the beautiful mountains and natural beauty he loves to paint.
RECEPTION: We will have a reception for this show will be on Sunday, August 8th, 2021 from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Art House Gallery. Awards will be announced at the reception.
PICK UP OF ARTWORK: All artwork MUST be picked up on Sunday September 12th between 10:00am and 2:00pm at the Art House Gallery. Note: All work must be picked up within two weeks of show close or it becomes the property of TAC. Please make arrangements accordingly. No work may be withdrawn before the close of the show without permission from the show chair.
The Arts Colony is located at 3120 Taylor Ave, Corona 92882, one block W. of Main St. in Corona. Entries will be accepted in the Art House Gallery, the second house on the right as you enter Corona Heritage Park.
